The International Indian Treaty Council (IITC) is an organization of Indigenous peoples working for self-determination and the recognition and protection of human rights, treaties, traditional cultures and sacred lands. IITC was founded in 1974 and in 1977 became the first Indigenous organization to receive consultative status with the United Nations economic and social council. In 2011, IITC was the first Indigenous organization to be upgraded to 'general consultative status' in recognition of its wide range of work in a number of UN bodies and processes.
