Hurricane Irma was one of the most intense hurricanes ever observed in the Atlantic, and made landfall while the U.S. was still reeling from Hurricane Harvey's devastation of Houston and surrounding areas. Irma has caused at least 68 deaths, left millions without power, and cost billions of dollars in damage in the Caribbean and southeastern U.S. With Houston still recovering, and now the need for relief in Florida and the Caribbean, the sheer amount of assistance needed may feel overwhelming.
Still, many donors are asking, “How can I help?” The Center for High Impact Philanthropy has put together three tips for those that want to help, along with some examples of organizations that are on the ground providing relief in Florida and the Caribbean.
- Give money, not items.
- Think large and small organizations.
- Consider giving for longer-term needs.
