Project

Save Companion Parrots through Rescue & Education

Host Organization: Parrot Education and Adoption Center San Diego, CA, United States http://peac.org

About

This project will provide funds for the ongoing care & rehabilitation of PEAC's rescued and surrendered companion parrots. Veterinary costs comprise the bulk of our annual operating budget. Remaining funds are used for educational outreach including seminars & expos, allowing us to provide information to the general public & potential owners regarding the proper care of parrots. Additional funding is needed to increase organization visibility, thus reaching more people and helping more parrots

Need

The problem put simply is the number of parrots entering the pet trade each year surpases the number of qualified homes that are available. The US captive parrot population is estimated to reach 100 million by the year 2020. The yearly estimates are that 2.5 million parrots are hatched by US breeders yearly. Add to that 20,000 parrots illegally enter the USA from Mexico each year, with another 5,000 smuggled in from elsewhere (Illegal imports remain a problem).

Long term impact

PEAC's mission has always been a two-pronged approach; though we currently provide a place for parrots to go in the event the owner need to relinquish them, it is through our educational programs that we hope to bring about a better understanding of the commitment represented by parrot ownership. Both approaches require funding to reach out to a larger group of people. Our long term goal is to see a day were we have diminished the cycle of unwanted parrots.
