Project

Post-prison Support for 300 Women in Sierra Leone

Host Organization: AdvocAid Freetown, Western Region, Sierra Leone http://www.advocaidsl.org

About

AdvocAid wants to empower marginalised female ex-detainees who may otherwise become further impoverished and who risk discrimination and violence after their release from detention. It is our aim to ensure that these women are equipped to transform their lives by giving start-up support and membership of our post-prison support group, the Go Bifo Women (meaning 'moving forward' in Krio).

Need

In Sierra Leone, women and girls who have been incarcerated often face significant barriers upon their release, including stigma, lack of resources, and limited access to support systems, which can lead to a cycle of recidivism (reoffending) and further entrenchment in the criminal justice system. AdvocAid recognises that without comprehensive post-prison support, these individuals struggle to reintegrate into society, impacting not only their lives but also the communities they return to.

Long term impact

The potential long-term impact of this project is profound. By equipping women and girls with the tools and support they need, we promote safer communities, reduce recidivism rates, and uplift families. In the long run, we envision a society where every woman and girl has the opportunity to thrive, contributing positively. Our post-prison support programme will reach at least 300 former detainees, ensuring that they rehabilitate into their communities as stronger women with brighter prospects.
