Nonprofit Consortium of St. Croix (USVI)

Host Organization: St. Croix Foundation for Community Development Christiansted, Virgin Islands http://www.stxfoundation.org

About

The Nonprofit Consortium actively convenes 35+ organizations in health & human services, environment and education to collaborate around; 1) programming; 2) operating support and 3) organizational capacity building. This project is critical due to the compounded impact of Hurricanes Maria and COVID-19 and will enable us to convene, provide direct services, and advocate for both front-line service providers and secondary impact service organizations.

Need

In 2016, one year before Hurricanes Irma and Maria, the Nonprofit Consortium was conceived to build capacity within St. Croix's Civic Sector in response to economic and political shifts that were decimating funding pools while social needs exploded. As a territory, the U.S. Virgin Islands have a stifled voice, no vote at the federal level, and sits in an isolated blind spot for funding. As a predominantly Black and Brown community, vital services have been underfunded and challenging to sustain.

Long term impact

The NPC fosters meaningful support and compiles data respective to how to strengthen and sustain local civic society. In a disruption to a paradigm of competition, the Consortium is centering collaboration across the sector to develop healthy, equitable new systems that replace outdated and ineffective ones. Today, the Consortium is building individual organizational capacity, sector capacity, and overall civic power to open access for new networks, systems, and funding opportunities.
