Semi-Permanent Roofing and Apprenticeship Program

About

ConPRmetidos, along with Heart 9/11 and the University of the Sacred Heart, have agreed to partner in a project to repair or replace damaged roofs in the communities of Playita and Cantera Peninsula in Puerto Rico using volunteers provided by HEART 9/11 and apprentices recruited by Sacred Heart. The Program contains three components: (1) damage assessment and inventory; (2) recruitment, training, and management of fifteen apprentices; and (3) installation of fifty semi-permanent roofs.

Need

Playita and Cantera are two vulnerable communities in San Juan that were severely affected by hurricane Maria's devastating hit. Most of the residents in the community were left without a safe home because the hurricane knocked down almost all of the roofs and infrastructure. Many of the residents in this community do not qualify for other forms of aid and, if left unattended, they will not have a safe place to live for the next hurricane season that is just around the co

Long term impact

Instead of bringing in a team of volunteers to simply fix the roofs, this program will train local community members to acquire the skills necessary, not only to fix their own roofs but to pass on that knowledge to other members and continue building sustainable structures in their communities.
