Protect Victims of Sexual Abuse and Exploitation
About
APLE's Victim Support and Assistance Program focuses on providing high-quality and timely legal and social support for child victims of sexual abuse and exploitation in Cambodia. APLE enables child victims to pursue justice without further trauma and achieve stable lives. APLE's Community Industry and Media Engagement Program provides awareness raising and training sessions to empower communities and build their resilience against Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation.
Need
In Cambodia, 5.6% of boys and 4.4% of girls are estimated to have experienced sexual abuse before they turn 18. Among children who live and work on the street the estimated prevalence is as much as 40%. A general lack of awareness and resources make it difficult for the Criminal Justice System to respond to cases of sexual abuse and exploitation in an efficient manner, while the general public lacks knowledge on how to protect children.
Long term impact
The program is designed for sustainable, long lasting results. A change at the governmental level is expected to be achieved with the training of trainer sessions within the police to conduct child-friendly investigations. The Court Support Program will provide victims with the support they need to rebuild their lives, and Community Engagement strives to make behavioral changes within communities by providing them a deeper understanding on what child sexual abuse and exploitation entails.
