Let NEW MASCULINTIES shine!

Host Organization: Fundacion A mano manaba Sitio Don Juan, Ecuador http://www.amanomanaba.org

About

Amidst confinement and economic tensions, domestic violence is on the rise; we believe punishment or imprisonment is not the answer to the problem. Using psychosocial methods this project intends to challenge social mores that naturalize violent behavior in boys and men. During a 12 month period, with the assistance of professionals, we will raise awareness, train staff, volunteers, and community members by means of workshops, information, and training in gender equality and New Masculinities.

Need

Traditional masculinity demands of men and boys to suppress any trace of vulnerability or need of support. In times of crisis, they should continue being breadwinners, controlling their emotions while giving into aggressive and daring activities. The key to toxic masculinity is power over others, whether it is over women, children, or other men. Under these circumstances, psychology has proven, anger is a powerful cover for sadness or shame.

Long term impact

This project addresses exacerbated existing tensions, imbalances, and violence. By seizing this unique opportunity to collaboratively change course, this project promises to enable lasting positive social impacts such as New Masculinities and Gender Equality. Since 2016, after a 7.8 earthquake hit this tiny village, we have been empowering girls and women through educational programs. Our standing in the community allows us to intervene as insiders and grow stronger, along with our neighbors.

About the Organization

Advance gender equality in order to improve the lives of the most vulnerable population - girls, boys and women - in northern Manabi through formal and informal education programs. Empower girls and women so they may explore their full potential, educate young men so they may be able to challenge the traditional masculinity of a patriarchal society that exposes them to danger, solitude, and violence.
