Project

Support children with disabilities in Afghanistan

Host Organization: Enabled Children Initiative Ltd Bradenton, FL, United States https://www.enabledchildren.org

About

Afghanistan has one of the largest disabled populations in the world, with nearly 20% of Afghan children living with a disability. The Enabled Children Initiative supports over 1,000 Afghan children with disabilities and their families, providing education, training, humanitarian and emergency relief services. This project will allow us to enroll 15 additional children/families with disability living in poverty into our Community-based Disability Awareness & Support program.

Need

Afghanistan is facing a major humanitarian crisis. It also has one of the largest populations of persons with disabilities in the world. The Asia Foundation Model Disability Survey for Afghanistan showed that 17.3% of children, and 80% of adults, have some form of a disability, with prevalence higher in women and girls. Most persons with disabilities face discrimination, exclusion and abuse, and there are very few services and supports to access education, healthcare or emergency relief.

Long term impact

Long-term change happens within families who have access to information, services and support for their child, and within communities who are supportive. This program provides tailored support to individual families and their children, as well as awareness-raising sessions for their communities, to create the knowledge foundation and support networks for long-term positive change.

About the Organization

Our mission is to: *Provide safe spaces for children and youth with disabilities to access their rights to education, healthcare and basic services *Increase awareness and understanding of disability across Afghanistan *Promote inclusion for persons with disabilities *Support dignified lives for persons with disabilities
