Bring America Home Now Direct-Action Campaign
About
The Bring America Home Now Direct-Action Campaign seeks to address the critical issue of homelessness across the United States. As the nation grapples with increasing rates of housing instability, our campaign aims to mobilize communities, raise awareness, and advocate for policy changes that will ensure safe, affordable housing for all Americans and End Criminalization practices that fine, jail and arrest people because they are experiencing homelessness.
Need
Homeless has grown to its highest recorded level in modern history. The growth in homelessness has ben fueled by dramatic housing cost, stagnant wages and the reliance on criminalization. Criminalization does not solve homelessness it exacerbates homeless. The overwhelming majority of citizens polled do not support criminalization yet we have seen a dramatic increase in these practices. The worst examples are it is a felony with up to six years in prison to be homeless in Tennessee.
Long term impact
Increased public engagement and support for homelessness-related initiatives. Greater visibility of homelessness issues within media and public discourse. Concrete policy changes at the local, state, and national levels that address housing affordability and support services. Enhanced capacity of service organizations to support individuals experiencing homelessness.
About the Organization
The National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH) envisions a world where everyone has a safe, decent, accessible and affordable home. Our mission is to end and prevent homelessness while ensuring the immediate needs of those experiencing homelessness are met and their civil rights are respected and protected. We affirms the following Guiding Principles/Values: 1. We can and prevent homelessness. 2. People who are currently experiencing or have experienced homelessness must be leaders in all the work of NCH and in the movement to end homelessness. 3. NCH believes in the dignity of all people: housing, healthy food, quality health care, education and livable incomes as basic human rights. 4. It is morally, ethically, and legally wrong to discriminate against and criminalize people struggling to meet their basic needs. 5. Public policy makers and elected officials at all levels must be held accountable to end the systemic and structural causes of homelessness. 6. Structural racism and discrimination are root causes of homelessness and violates human dignity. 7. Collaboration between NCH and its diverse stakeholders, is critical in directing NCH's work.
