First Amendment Watch at New York University recently published the educator’s guide “Does the First Amendment Allow the Government to Censor Art?” which addresses the relationship between freedom of speech and art censorship. It focuses on exploring two overarching questions: What are the limited circumstances under which public officials can censor art? And what protection does the First Amendment provide?

The rest of the document is organized into five different First Amendment issue sections that are posed to the reader as questions. For example, issue #1 asks, and then answers, “Are Visual Arts Protected ‘Speech’ Under the First Amendment?”
