EmpowerHER Africa: Training for Gender Equality
About
At Cameras For Girls, we are developing a sustainable training program to advance Cameras For Girls' mission of promoting gender equality in Africa. This initiative will empower former students to mentor new students, fostering growth and skill development. Simultaneously, this program will significantly enhance gender equity within Africa's male-dominated journalism and photography sectors, promoting greater opportunities and representation for women in these industries.
Need
Our founder and CEO, Amina Mohamed, is the sole trainer of all our African programming. She is also the executive director and the founder who runs the day-to-day operations. To sustain and grow the program, we seek to build a "train the trainer" program for former students and other women photographers in Africa, building on our mission for gender equity in the male-dominated journalism and photography industries.
Long term impact
Cameras For Girls can tap into the power of visual storytelling to raise awareness, challenge stereotypes, and drive positive change while building up women's voices who are traditionally kept out of the top positions because of societal and cultural biases across Africa. These women will become ambassadors of change, inspiring and mentoring their peers to embrace their creativity and challenge traditional norms while becoming partners and not just participants in the Cameras For Girls program.
About the Organization
Cameras For Girls pursues Women's Empowerment and Gender Equality in Africa using photography as our catalyst. We provide women who face gender-based barriers with a camera to keep and a 4-phase photography and business-skills curriculum to support their goals of becoming paid journalists and photographers in male-dominated spaces. Our students learn to capture their world with their new cameras giving young women the confidence to work with recognized skills that immediately improve their options, reduce gender inequality and fight poverty.
